Leaving Home

Leaving Home

Leaving Home gives an example of how to succeed in life when getting started can be difficult without a support system. Once established as a motivated individual, anyone can pursue a career of their choice, travel the world, and enjoy life in general. Bud’s travels took him to a dozen different countries where he experienced various cultural differences and similarities. As an educator, there were ample opportunities to share his experience and knowledge with students and other educators. Starting your life without the benefit of at least a high school education can present a challenge to young folks; however, perseverance in making personal improvements can make a major difference in how we spend our later years. “Life is not about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself” (anonymous).

America at War

America at War

Prepare to be surprised. America at War from Cannon Balls to Drones will illustrate amazing facts about the ten wars our country has survived with amazing results. Although wars are infamous for loss of life and injury, the author will provide factual information on the various ways that each war produced improvements in methodology and treatment of injuries, illness and improved the outcome for millions of Americans. New technology from each war will be discussed as well as how we dealt with the Spanish pandemic of 1918 and how it compared with our current battle with the COVID-19 virus. In the early years of war (1775-1783), medical care took a turn for the worse with the majority of soldiers dying from disease due to unsanitary conditions. In 1812, the typical soldier still died from infectious diseases such as dysentery, typhoid, and pneumonia-the number one killer at the time. Eventually, handwashing would be introduced, reducing infections and saving lives. Other early medical improvements would include anesthesia, tourniquets, amputations, prosthetics, and embalming. Amputations saved more lives than any other wartime medical procedure. Later wars will see the invention of technology such as sonar (ultrasound), radar, and thermography, to name a few.

As the writing of this book concludes, the fear of nuclear weapon involvement is increasing as well as NATO’S expressed worry that a war between Russia and NATO could occur if the situation continues to spin out of control. Historically, the situation between Russia and Ukraine has been compared to previous situations such as the Cuban missile crisis in October 1962, a 35 day confrontation between the United States and Cuba. As the final page of this book was written, the United States was finalizing plans to send Patriot missile defense systems to Ukraine, despite Russia’s stating that this would be a provocative moves by the United States that could prompt a response from Russia..

The Life of Harry

The Life of Harry is a true and humorous story about a truck driver from Ohio. Harry’s story began in the Depression era as a young man living in Philadelphia and continued for 86 years. His various lifestyles and adventures were amazing by today’s standards. He is the only person that I know who would try to make people laugh at a funeral. When his wife Tina died of an untimely death by running over herself with a car, Harry carried a pistol in his pocket during the funeral. When asked why he did that, his reply was, “Just in case she tries to get back up”.

During the funeral, Harry placed all of Tina’s bingo cards in the coffin alongside her, saying, “Just in case she needs these wherever she is going”. This was the only funeral that I ever attended where laughter could be heard throughout the event. Needless to say, neither Harry nor Tina were religious. Harry’s friends included people of infamy, such as Jimmy Hoffa, and less famous people such as cousin Lenny Ross of Philadelphia, a nightclub comic and booze maker during prohibition.

Israel and Hamas at War

The history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict traces back to the late 19th century when Zionists sought to establish a homeland for the Jewish people in Ottoman-controlled Palestine. The Balfour Declaration of 1917, issued by the British government, endorsed the idea of a Jewish homeland in Palestine, which led to an influx of Jewish immigrants to the region. Following World War II and the Holocaust, international pressure mounted for the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine, leading the creation of Israel in 1948.

The establishment of Israel, and the war that followed and preceded it, led to the displacement of hundreds of Palestines who became refugees, sparking a decades-long conflict between Israel and the Palestinian people. The Pelestinians seek to establish their own independent state in at least a part of historic Palestine. Israeli defense of its own borders, control over the West Bank, the Egyptian-Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip, and Palestinian internal politics currently make this goal out of reach.
